Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

I. About the Novel

Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first edition credited the 1719. The first edition credited the work's protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to beliebe he was real person and the bool a trabelogue of trus incidents.

The story has since been perceived to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific island called "Más a Tierra", now part of Chile, which was renamed Robinson Crusoe Islandin 1966, but various literary sources have also been suggested.
Despite its simple narrative style, Robinson Crusoe was well received in the literary world and is often credited as marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. Before the end of 1719, the book had already run through four editions, and it has gone on to become one of the most widely published books in history, spawning numerous sequels and adaptations for stage, film, and television.

Ⅲ.About the Author

Daniel Defoe born , was an English trader, writer, journalist, pamphleteer, and spy, most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is noted for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularise  the form in Britain with others such as Samuel Richardson, and is among the founders of the English novel. He was a prolific and versatile writer, producing more than five hundred books, pamphlets, and journals on various topics, including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology, and the supernatural. He was also a pioneer of economic journalism.

Ⅳ. About Robinson Crusoe

Robinson Crusoe

Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe (1719) relates the story of a man's shipwreck on a desert island for thirty years and his subsequent adventures. Usually read as fiction, a coincidence of background geography suggests that this may be non-fiction. In the opening pages of The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, the author describes how Crusoe settled in Bedford, married and produced a family, and that when his wife died, he went off on these further adventures. Bedford is also the place where the brother of "H. F." in A Journal of the Plague Year retired to avoid the danger of the plague, so that by implication, if these works were not fiction, Defoe's family met Crusoe in Bedford, from whence the information in these books was gathered. Defoe went to school in Stoke Newington, London, with a friend named Caruso.
The novel has been assumed to be based in part on the story of the Scottish castaway Alexander Selkirk, who spent four years stranded in the Juan Fernández Islands, but this is inconsistent with the details of the narrative. The island Selkirk lived on was name Más a Tierra (Closer to Land) at the time and was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966. It has been supposed that Defoe may have also been inspired by the Latin or English translation of a book by the Andalusian-Arab Muslim polymath Ibn Tufail, who was known as "Abubacer" in Europe. The Latin edition of the book was entitled Philosophus Autodidactus and it was an earlier novel that is also set on a deserted island.

Ⅴ. My Reaction

Reaction Point

A. Reaction Point - protagonist (main character

  • Main Character is Robinson Crusoe and Friday.

  • Robinson Crusoe is an English gentleman cast ashore in the uninhabited island.

  • Friday is the boy who escaped from a barbarian. Because the day when Robinson Crusoe helped him was Friday, Friday was named Friday by Robinson Crusoe.
  • He calls Robinson Crusoe "a master" and serves it as an attendant.

B. Reaction Point -setting (設定、背景、場所)

  • Robinson Crusoe is an aerial person, but is said to be it when really made from a true story of Scottish chief navigator Alexander cell Kirk who lived in an uninhabited island.

C. Reaction Point - story arc (narrative arc)

  • In lonely uninhabited island life, it is the work which way of life of the Crusoe is drawn on closely.

]

 D. Jeneral Opinion

A description of uninhabited island life for a long time by the then civilization which drifted. As for the life of the uninhabited island in only the one, a sporting blood and the side called stronger art to survive it are strong. In the open place, I build daily life and therefore I process a necessary thing locally and I bring it from a wrecked ship and recruit you and find you. It is survival itself, and such a daily life is drawn plainly. Faith to God increases as a support of the hearts there, and handling for the savage tribe lets you right feel culture. It is the story that is made to think about what kind of thing it is that a person lives like a person. In addition, the action of the chief character who acted as the English gentleman was very impressive in spite of being the uninhabited island where there were not rules.

Daffodils by William Wordsworth

Daffodils by William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a Cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and Hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden Daffodils;
Beside the Lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:-
A Poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company:
I gazed---and gazed---but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude,
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the Daffodils.

The Daffodils

I. About the Poem

The most famous poem in the English language was composed in 1804, two years after Wordsworth saw the flowers while walking by Ullswater on a stormy day with Dorothy, his sister. His inspiration for the poem came from an account written by Dorothy.

Although Wordsworth's 'Daffodils' is one of the most famous and widely read poems in the English language, daffodils were probably not Wordsworth's favourite flower. He wrote no less than three poems about the tiny Common Pilewort (Celandine) which blossoms in early spring.

II. About the Poet

Poet William Wordsworth was born on April 7, 1770, in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England. Wordsworth’s mother died when he was 7, and he was an orphan at 13. Despite these losses, he did well at Hawkshead Grammar School—where he wrote his first poetry—and went on to study at Cambridge University. He did not excel there, but managed to graduate in 1791.

Wordsworth had visited France in 1790—in the midst of the French Revolution—and was a supporter of the new government’s republican ideals. On a return trip to France the next year, he fell in love with Annette Vallon, who became pregnant. However, the declaration of war between England and France in 1793 separated the two. Left adrift and without income in England, Wordsworth was influenced by radicals such as William Godwin.
